Bye 2010… Hello 2011

Kinda the same deal like last year. 2010 had a lot of things going on (well, at least sports wise). World Cup… Winter Olympics… Obviously, there was more to it than just sports. Midway through President Obama’s first term, thus a lot of pressure towards getting things done. Anyway, here’s just some thoughts looking back on 2010. I’ll update this as more thoughts come through my mind over the next several days, but for now, this is just the start. And feel free to comment on significant events that may have happened.

  • Healthcare reform made some progress (some would say progress, others would say setbacks) in the United States. There’s a lot of things that are going to change… Too many to list, so I’ll let this CNN post recap it for you
  • The Winter Olympics were a definite success up in Vancouver. A South Korean skater wins the women’s competition. Sid “the Kid” Crosby wins it for the host country and continues his legacy as possibly the best hockey player of all time. The U.S. actually perform decently well for once in the Winter Olympics? Who knew? …
  • Natural disasters has its calling in 2010. Haiti gets hit with a nasty earthquake at the beginning of the year, then the cholera outbreak (Will they ever see any relief?)… Pakistan gets nasty floods… Chile gets hit with a 8.8 earthquake and China with a 6.9… Eyjafjallajökull explodes and covers all of Europe with ash (well, not all but a lot)…
  • The World Cup comes to Africa for the first time ever, taking place in South Africa. Tactics may have changed, but still a great tournament overall. Spain kills off all their ghosts by finally winning it with their passing flair and finesse. And by a Iniesta goal in extra time…
  • Arguments for Messi vs. Ronaldo as the best player in the world might be overshadowed by the fact that Xavi may actually be better than both of them (despite scoring less goals).
  • Lakers win another NBA championship. Whatever…
  • LeBron James goes from everyone’s favorite basketball player to the most hated after making an entire nation have to watch a one-hour special to announce that he’s leaving to go play in South Beach.
  • North Korea keeps shooting at South Korea… Not a surprise there…
  • San Francisco Giants win the World Series. And no, Hell didn’t freeze over…
  • FIFA awards the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. FIFA then realizes that it’s 100F degrees during the summer and has to reconsider moving it to the winter. Not sure if they saw this either
  • Word Lens comes out with a OCR application where you point your iPhone at a word and it gives the translation into another target language. Currently only Spanish and English, but maybe more to come?
  • Miners in Chile get trapped for 60 or so days. To them, it felt like eternity.

As for me…

  • Coming back to Portland and seeing all my high school friends reminded me that we’ve all definitely grown up over the past seven years since we’ve graduated from that “small” high school in 2003. And we’ve changed a lot.
  • Dating requires a lot of patience… A lot…
  • Change is inevitable. Whether you like it or not. It’s going to happen.
  • Getting your ass handed to you on the field is always a great way to keep your ego in check.

(More thoughts to come)
